Her desire to be involved in public life arose at age 13, through a student city councilor project. Since then, this interest has transformed into a purpose and a vocation.

Professor Rochelle is in her second term as a city councilor and has a track record marked by active listening, commitment to education, and advocacy for the rights of women and children. Rochelle is also one of the few women to hold a seat on the City Council of her city in over two centuries of history.

A mandate focused on women and children.

Rochelle already has more than 30 approved projects, including... Red Flag Law against Domestic Violence, the creation of the Women's Attorney's Office and initiatives focused on maternal health and rights within the Legislative branch.

With the goal of bringing her experiences from both inside and outside of politics to her political career, she chose to receive prenatal care through the public health system during her pregnancy, in order to understand the reality faced by women in the city. This experience became a central theme in her political agenda and reinforced her commitment to more effective public policies.

Furthermore, among the achievements she is most proud of is the policy of menstrual dignity in schools. "Today, all female students in the Uberaba municipal school system receive sanitary pads at school," she emphasizes. For her, guaranteeing basic conditions is also guaranteeing permanence and dignity.

Going back to childhood, the leader also spearheaded the "Play Day" initiative, which brings activities to the city's public squares. "We see children occupying squares, playing with their own toys, and in this way we advocate for a childhood of play, of fun, and of health," she explains. According to her, the project has been keeping children away from screens.

Motherhood and politics

Mother of Lara and Raul, Rochelle says that balancing political life with motherhood has been a challenge. She was the first female councilor in Uberaba to take maternity leave – a milestone that highlights the structural challenges the parliament faces regarding women's participation. Therefore, her substitute assumed the position.

“It was quite challenging to reconcile political life with motherhood,” she says. Even during her pregnancy, she had to face institutional obstacles to guarantee basic rights. According to her, this experience changed her perspective on her political mandate: “Motherhood made me look at politics in a different way.”

In a context where female representation in city councils remains a challenge, their presence carries significance. In over 200 years of history, Uberaba has had only ten women serving as city councilors. Today, they hold four out of 21 seats.

Rochelle is clear about the role she plays and what she represents. Furthermore, she emphasizes that she understands the path needs to be more open. "I think a lot about my political activity with this objective in mind. To be there to open up space so that other women and girls can want to occupy it," she points out.

For her, being in politics demands both firmness and purpose. "We are always on guard, always having to assert ourselves," she commented. Even so, she remains driven by the goal of building a better and more welcoming society for women.

Some political careers begin early, as is the case with Rochelle Gutierrez, city councilor of Uberaba (MG) and leader of RenovaBR.
