Originally from Cuiab\u00e1, federal deputy and RenovaBR leader Gisela Simona demonstrates in practice that parliamentary work should be guided by the central interests of the population. With a diverse mandate, she brings to the National Congress a performance marked by deliverables, data, and evidence. Her political trajectory began based on proposals related to consumer protection, but has expanded to other issues of social interest, such as the protection of women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The congresswoman is part of the consumer protection and women's rights committees, and is a member of the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ), one of the most important committees in the House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And, in addition to her legislative work in parliament, she says she maintains a routine of traveling throughout the interior of Mato Grosso, visiting more remote municipalities and communities to engage directly with citizens and seeking to bring the population's demands to parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This proximity, combined with the use of digital tools and public hearings, is part of his mandate's strategy to build public policies that are more connected to the reality of the population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Gisela, politics only fulfills its role when it manages to transform these insights into concrete actions. And, in this process, ensuring more women in positions of power is fundamental to broadening perspectives and priorities within Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the highlights of this work was her participation as rapporteur for the so-called anti-femicide package (Law No. 14,994) in the Chamber of Deputies. The bill, which originated in the Senate, strengthens legislation to combat violence against women and toughens penalties for femicide crimes, which can reach up to 40 years in prison, in addition to providing for aggravating circumstances and protective measures for victims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the congresswoman, drafting the text required dialogue and coordination between different parliamentarians and sectors of society. "Being the rapporteur for this law, which required a great deal of coordination for its approval, is a major achievement in this journey," she states. She emphasizes that the measure represents an important step in confronting gender-based violence and strengthening public policies aimed at protecting women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The law expands preventive and punitive responses to crimes committed against women, provides for imprisonment of 20 to 40 years, and increases the penalty for domestic violence, bodily harm, threats, and violation of protective measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite her experience in politics and active presence in Congress, Gisela admits that the obstacles for women in politics are everyday occurrences, permeated by episodes of delegitimization. "These are scenes that try to say that this world of politics wasn't made for us. From small acts, like not being heard in important party decisions, 'forgetting' to invite us to meetings, or interrupting our speeches in parliament," she recounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She recounts that during her candidacy for mayor of Cuiab\u00e1, early in her campaign, an opponent stated that she was "a good candidate despite being a woman" during a live debate. This statement sparked a public debate about women's participation in local politics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The journey to the Chamber of Deputies was also full of challenges. In her first campaign, Gisela says she didn't receive all the party and structural support she needed. "What they promised me didn't arrive, and I even went to the press to complain about the lack of resources from the electoral fund," she recalls. Even so, she won more than 50,000 votes and became the most voted-for female candidate in Cuiab\u00e1's history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to her, the result was crucial in consolidating her political presence. \u201cI had to prove with votes that I wasn\u2019t in politics just to run. While some people adjust things in a conversation, we need to prove that we have the capacity to win an election.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her assessment, further progress is needed regarding opportunities for female candidates and within political parties. "Many are called upon to fulfill quotas and, when they have a chance to win, end up being sabotaged along the way," she says. For her, one solution would be to guarantee more effective seats for women in parliament. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
