Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975, the day reinforces, in Brazil and around the world, the urgency of confronting historical inequalities – including gender-based violence and the low participation of women in positions of power.

Although there has been progress, the data shows that the challenge of reducing gender inequalities remains enormous. According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, in 2025, Brazil registered 1,568 victims of femicide, an increase of 4.71 per 100,000 compared to the previous year. Monitoring also shows that between 2021 and 2024, the majority of occurrences (62.61 per 100,000) involved Black women as victims – 5,000 cases were analyzed. This scenario highlights that gender violence is not only constantly present in the daily lives of the population, but is also rooted in racial and social inequalities. Furthermore, since the crime of femicide was codified in Brazilian legislation in 2015, more than 13,000 women have been murdered in the country for reasons related to their gender.

In spaces of power and political decision-making, women remain underrepresented. Despite representing 52.61% of the Brazilian electorate, their presence in elected positions is still limited. In the 2022 elections, only 15.11% of the elected federal deputies were women. Furthermore, in the 2020 municipal elections, only 13% of municipalities elected female mayors.

Read more: We don't just need more women in politics. We need them to stay in politics. – Renova BR

With difficulties accessing campaign financing and resources, as well as being susceptible to less party support, women face more barriers in their political careers, which often keep them away from public life – limiting the diversity of voices in decision-making.

Strengthening women's participation in politics is therefore a fundamental step towards improving the quality and strengthening of democracy. When more women, from diverse backgrounds, participate in public decisions, the greater the chances that policies and solutions will better reflect the diversity of Brazilian society.

It is in this context that RenovaBR, as a school for training and accelerating political and public leadership, operates. Throughout its eight-year history, our classroom has contributed to preparing and supporting women who wish to occupy positions of power. The pursuit of greater gender equality is also reflected in the composition of the classes. In the Leaders 2025 Training Program, for example, women were the majority, representing 54.55% of the participants, while men totaled 45.45%. Racial diversity also stood out: 45.45% of the students identified as mixed-race, 40.91% as white, 12.73% as black, and 0.91% as indigenous.

The presence of women also marks the organization's trajectory. Today, the RenovaBR Alumni community — made up of political leaders trained by the school over the past eight years — includes approximately 401 women, many of whom are working in different spheres of politics and public administration.

Through training, support networks, and leadership development, RenovaBR seeks to reduce barriers and expand opportunities for more women to run for office, hold public positions, and influence decisions that impact millions of people.

On this March 8th, we reinforce a conviction: a more representative democracy necessarily involves the presence of more women in politics. Valuing and encouraging female leadership is not only a matter of justice, but an essential step in building a more pluralistic, balanced Brazil, better prepared to face its challenges.

On International Women's Day, data on gender inequality and violence reinforce the importance of training and supporting new female leaders in Brazil.
