With the book Where is my father?, Yago Jos\u00e9 Eloy<\/a> believes in reading as a gateway to opportunities in early childhood. A RenovaBR alumnus, he combines his academic and cultural journey with his work in public policy to strengthen family bonds and guarantee children the right to read and dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Promoting reading needs to be a commitment from families and public authorities alike," he states. His diverse experience as a teacher, researcher, and cultural manager reflects a commitment to inclusive education and building a more just society from early childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early childhood and representation in literature<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, he released his book, inspired by his master's dissertation<\/a> in Ethnic-Racial Relations. The work arose from the observation that less than 4% of Black children's literature published in Brazil between 2000 and 2021 addressed Black fatherhood as a central theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book expands children's access to stories that strengthen emotional bonds and challenge stereotypes. In the author's view, the lack of men performing childcare roles is linked to a culture that attributes this role exclusively to women, and this can sometimes contribute to parental abandonment. "Added to this, in the case of Black men, paternal absences are also deeply linked to structural racism, which historically silences present fatherhood and emphasizes only absences," he adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, Yago explains that the book has two purposes. First, to map and give visibility to the paternal presence of Black men and recognize those who play a positive role alongside their children in a context marked by abandonment. Furthermore, the story is an opportunity for fathers and children to feel represented and be moved by the narrative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literature, fatherhood and the future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yago advocates for encouraging reading at home, but also supporting it through government support. "The greatest incentive a child can receive is the example set within the home. But states and municipalities also need to invest in reading programs, libraries, and meetings with writers," he states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Itagua\u00ed House of Culture<\/a>, in the Costa Verde region of Rio de Janeiro, where he works as a cultural manager, he organizes literary gatherings and other activities that bring children closer to the world of books. At the Machado de Assis Library, one of the practices developed is literary gatherings, which are held monthly with invited local writers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

"In the case of Black children, I believe it's essential that they have access to anti-racist literature written by Black authors.
