His presence in Beirut sheds light on his political trajectory and the role of parliamentary diplomacy in times of crisis.

Marcelo Calero is a leader who straddles the lines of diplomacy and institutional politics. Returning to the diplomatic corps after 13 years away, during which time he held various positions, the diplomat emphasizes that his experience in politics and his training at RenovaBR contribute to his daily work, which is marked by dialogue, listening, and a commitment to the values of Brazilian diplomacy at a time of conflict in Lebanon.

"In 2018, after participating in the formation of RenovaBR, I ran for federal deputy in the elections. But I consider my true entry into politics to have been in 2013, when I served in the Rio de Janeiro City Hall," recalls Calero, who at the time left the Brazilian Embassy in Mexico to take on the role of deputy coordinator of International Relations in the state capital, at the invitation of then-mayor Eduardo Paes. From there, he moved to the Municipal Department of Culture in 2015 and later to the Ministry of Culture in 2016.

For him, dialogue is a tool for construction and is essential, both in diplomacy and in his political practice. "I think one of the hallmarks of diplomacy is precisely dialogue and the attempt to reconcile views that, at first, seem opposed," he explains. This skill also translated into a constant search for common ground during his tenure as a federal representative.

Recent conflicts in the Middle East

His return to diplomacy comes in a sensitive context. Beirut, where he has been based since early 2025, is experiencing the unfolding of large-scale conflicts involving Israel, which, according to him, creates an atmosphere of apprehension, a natural part of widespread tensions like this. "We are in a country with strong ties to Brazil; there are approximately 8 million people of Lebanese descent in our territory and 20,000 Brazilians living here. Being in a country that has this relevance to Brazil is very interesting," he emphasizes.

Currently, Calero works primarily in the areas of cooperation and economics, seeking to strengthen ties and promote Brazilian interests in the regional arena. During the interview, he emphasized that one of the positive aspects of missions like this is the opportunity to get to know a new country and understand its political, economic, and security challenges, while also analyzing all of this in light of Brazil's interests.

He sees Brazil's diplomatic tradition as a strategic ally in times of instability. For him, the country's predictability on the international stage, supported by professional and well-trained diplomacy, is essential for the success of its actions abroad.

"Our positions on the international stage are guided by historical principles of Brazilian diplomacy, such as sovereignty, self-determination of peoples, and humanistic values. This builds trust, as countries know what to expect from Brazil," he explains.

Political training and performance in the country

His training at RenovaBR, in turn, remains an important milestone in his career. "The school has two fundamental components: the first is practical, focused on learning how to organize a campaign and understand the importance of electoral strategy; the second is learning about the structure of the Brazilian state, public policies, and the effectiveness of the administrative apparatus. Having gained this perspective through the course makes me a better public servant, with a broader vision of the whole," he states.

Marcelo Calero's return to diplomacy highlights how diverse experiences, combined with political training, can strengthen Brazil's performance in complex scenarios. Between his parliamentary experience and his commitment to diplomatic principles, his career reflects the importance of dialogue and building bridges in a world marked by tension and uncertainty.

Amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, diplomat and federal deputy Marcelo Calero was assigned to a temporary mission in Lebanon in early 2025, marking his return to the Foreign Ministry after more than a decade.
