Among the participants were Juci Cardoso, reelected councilwoman in Alagoinhas (BA) and Rochelle Gutierrez, reelected councilwoman in Uberaba (MG), both leaders of RenovaBR. Mafoane Odara, a member of the organization's Board of Directors, also participated, bringing crucial reflections on municipal politics and the need for effective representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Juci Cardoso began the debate by emphasizing the importance of valuing the role of Parliament and understanding what it really represents. \u201cI realize that most elected councilmen and councilwomen have no training in the role of parliament and what the Constitution says about our function. This leads many to play a mediocre role, without deeply understanding what it means to be a parliamentarian,\u201d she explained.
The councilwoman also highlighted that this lack of understanding causes many to be absorbed by clientelism, a system that exploits difficulties imposed by the State itself, perpetuating inequality in access to power. For her, it is urgent to start a debate on this interdependence and the issues that affect elected politicians, promoting a collective reflection on how to improve parliamentary performance and strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rochelle Gutierrez brought up the issue of diversity and how it is treated in spaces of power. \u201cSometimes it is better to ensure a broader discussion that takes place in Parliament. Maybe not everything will turn out exactly the way you would like, but the important thing is to ensure that this discussion becomes part of the public debate,\u201d she said.
For the councilwoman of Uberaba, diversity has been treated as a \u201csingle package\u201d in the parties, often occupying a space that is not that of integral decision-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI see executive committees where the place reserved for women is for support roles. Or, in legislative environments, where the role of councilwomen is only to fulfill the quota of one woman at the table. We often need to state the obvious. And, more than that, we need to repeat it,\u201d Rochelle pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mafoane Odara, a master in psychology and diversity activist, complemented the debate by highlighting the importance of reducing the distance between politicians and the population, going beyond the categories of gender and race to understand the diverse needs of citizens.
\u201cThe quality of our representation is directly related to the quality of the policies we build. We don\u2019t want more women in politics just because we \u2018think it\u2019s cool\u2019, but because this results in more qualified representation,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mafoane also highlighted the evolution of the debate on diversity in recent years, which has moved from superficial discussions to a more concrete understanding of the role of diversity in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
