On September 17, the book Politics & Democracy – Concepts and History for the Interpretation of Reality, written by political scientists Humberto Dantas and Leandro Salman Torelli, was launched. The publication offers an in-depth analysis of the concepts of politics and democracy, from their roots in Ancient Greece to the contemporary challenges of citizenship in Brazil and around the world.

Divided into two parts, the work initially explores the historical development of democracy and citizenship in the global context, revisiting the main moments and transformations that shaped modern democratic societies. The second part is dedicated to the history of democracy in Brazil, highlighting the different political phases that the country has gone through, from the colonial period to the post-dictatorship redemocratization.

“The book is aimed at educators, people who need to know about politics and high school students, in a country that is responsible for educating for the exercise of citizenship”, highlighted Humberto Dantas, professor at RenovaBR and co-author of the book.

The book was launched during an event promoted by RenovaBR, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) and the Movimento Voto Consciente (MVC). The meeting was held virtually and featured a diverse program. The institutional opening of the event took place at 7:00 pm and was attended by representatives of the partner institutions. Soon after, authors Humberto Dantas and Leandro Salman Torelli presented the main highlights of the book, offering the audience an overview of the objectives and the creation process of the work.

“In the current context in which we live, the challenge is to make people understand what it means to live in a democratic society. We write about this to encourage young people to think about this concept and embrace the idea of being a defender of democratic rights, which have been hard-won over generations,” says Salman Torelli, political scientist and co-author of the book.

The event also provided space for reports from educator Naomy Oliveira, a specialist in public education policies and a RenovaBR alumni, providing direct interaction with the audience. This approach reinforces the commitment of the institutions involved in promoting political education as a tool for strengthening citizenship.

“The work manages to make a connection with basic education, where students already have a more critical view of politics and human rights. They want to receive this content and works like these are important to support teachers during planning,” said Naomy Oliveira.

By offering a broad and contextualized view of the evolution of democracy, the work seeks to encourage reflection on the importance of an increasingly democratic and participatory society.
