RenovaBR Effect: Igor Santos in Paracatu
Igor Santos, reelected mayor of Paracatu (MG), represents political renewal in a city that, for decades, was dominated by the same political groups. With a candidacy considered unlikely in 2020, Igor not only won, but also consolidated his leadership by winning a second term.
“Paracatu needed a transformation. It was a city run by mayors, but under the same political group for 30 to 40 years. I put my name forward as a major change for the city and, against all odds, I was elected. Now, with my second term, our mission of transformation continues,” explains Igor.
Economic development and the future of Paracatu
One of Igor's main causes is sustainable economic development. Paracatu, known for its mining, faces the challenge of preparing for a future without the activity that is its main economic base.
“Ore does not yield two harvests. Our mining should end by 2040, and we need to think about what comes after that. Economic development is essential to ensure that Paracatu prospers even after this cycle.”
As an isolated city far from major urban centers, Igor sees the need for long-term planning. “Paracatu has 300 years of history and is 100 km from the nearest city. We need to create solutions that respect our history and prepare us for the future.”
Health and infrastructure are the challenges of a growing city
Paracatu is a regional reference in healthcare, serving a vast area in Minas Gerais. However, the infrastructure still faces challenges.
“The city is growing rapidly thanks to our economic development policy, but this brings infrastructure problems. Furthermore, our public health needs to be strengthened, since we are a regional reference and we still do not have a quality private network to meet demand.”
Education as a transformative priority
Igor has a personal connection to education, having studied in public schools and earned a place at the Federal University as a scholarship student. This background guides his decisions as mayor.
“Everything I have achieved has come from education, which is why we have invested so much in this sector. We are universalizing access to daycare, reaching 85% of coverage and moving towards 100%. We have also made significant progress in the literacy rate, ensuring that our students reach primary school with a solid foundation.”
The results are already visible. Paracatu stands out in the National Literacy Program, reflecting the commitment to quality public education. “This is a huge step for our children. Ensuring that they are literate by the age of 5 or 6 is an investment in the future of the city.”
Transforming the present and building the future
Igor also credits part of his political preparation to RenovaBR, where he found tools to structure his management vision. “I remember taking the course in 2019, still learning about politics, and hearing that it was necessary to achieve 50% of daycare coverage by 2024. We are surpassing this goal and reaching 100%. RenovaBR was essential to broaden my vision and prepare me to face the challenges of public administration.”
With a management marked by innovation and commitment to people, Igor Santos is writing a new chapter in the history of Paracatu. When asked about the legacy he wants to leave, Igor is categorical. “I want people to remember that I was someone who loved Paracatu. That I defended the city at every possible point, did my best and worked hard. We transformed the face of the city, and it is gratifying to think that, when I sign my last act as mayor, I will be able to say: mission accomplished.”
Its focus on education, health and sustainable economic development reflects a leadership that understands the challenges of the present, but keeps its eyes on the future.
“Paracatu is my home, my passion. Working to transform this city is an honor, and each day is an opportunity to do the best for our people,” concludes Igor.
