In the current scenario, where digitalization is growing by leaps and bounds, concerns about security in the virtual environment become increasingly pressing.

In response to these challenges, RenovaBR joined ITS Rio, an institute that brings together the main trends in technology, for an exclusive class for the Alumni Community.

Concerns about digital security

The digital environment generates apprehension in users regarding various aspects of the digital environment. Key concerns include:

  • Fake news and disinformation: The proliferation of false and misleading information that can negatively influence public debate and opinion formation.
  • Low engagement: The difficulty in generating and maintaining active and informed participation from users.
  • Data protection: The need to ensure that personal information is stored and used securely.
  • Artificial intelligence: The ethics and impact of using AI in digital interactions.
  • Polarization: The intensification of hate speech and the fragmentation of political debate.

“This polarized environment is harmful and opens up opportunities to increase the negative effects of the internet. When the extremes do not dialogue politically, they end up opting for attacks and a lack of dialogue,” says Gabriela da Costa, researcher in the area of democracy and technology at ITS Rio

Gabriela also shared the Pegabot platform (https://pegabot.com.br/), an innovative tool to combat misinformation and protect the integrity of online interactions.

Digital attack and security tips digital

A digital attack can occur on any social network, manifesting itself in different types of content, speech and conduct. It is crucial to identify practices associated with these attacks to develop effective defense strategies. “A virtual attack can be linked to different content, speeches and conduct. They can also happen in different channels, so it is essential to know what conduct is linked to them and think about security measures,” explains Gabriela da Costa.

To address these challenges, some best practices include:

  • Hire technology professionals: Count on the expertise of specialists to develop and implement robust security measures.
  • Prepare reports: Monitor and document suspicious activity and security incidents.
  • Empower the team: Offer regular training on digital security and good practices.
  • Use antivirus: Implement and maintain up-to-date protection software against malware and other threats.
  • Protect personal data: Develop effective mechanisms to guarantee the security and privacy of user and voter information.

What to do if you have suffered an attack?

If you are the target of a digital attack, the following actions are recommended:

  • Create a circle of protection and trust: Establish a support group that can assist in responding to the attack.
  • Collect evidence: Document all evidence related to the attack, including screenshots and activity logs.
  • Evaluate advertising: Decide carefully about disclosing the attack to avoid additional negative repercussions.
  • Document the context: Maintain a detailed record of the circumstances and impacts of the attack.
  • Take threats seriously: Treat any threat with due importance and seek immediate support.
  • Search reporting channels: Use appropriate means to report the attack and request removal of the offensive content.
  • Retraction: Seek a formal retraction when possible.

360º Conversation: Space for exchange and learning

Every month, RenovaBR hosts Conversa 360°, an event dedicated to exploring electoral topics, good practices in the public sector and political trends. This space promotes an open and enriching dialogue, allowing the exchange of experiences and learning among participants.

Among the highlights of the event's teachers are Gabriela da Costa, PhD student in Communication at Universidade Fluminense (UFF) and researcher in the area of democracy and technology at ITS Rio, and Celina Bottino, specialist in Human Rights and technology, master's degree from Harvard University and director of ITS Projects. Both bring vast experience and knowledge, contributing significantly to the discussions and learning at Conversa 360º.
